South Africans in the USA reconnect over flames and friendship at SA Love’s first Family Picnic

23 Jul 25 | Social

There’s something unmistakably comforting about the smell of a braai, the laughter of familiar accents, and the rhythm of a community gathering under open skies. That’s exactly what South Africans in the USA experienced at the 1st Annual Family Braai & Picnic hosted by SA Love at Lake Ridge, Virginia — a heart-warming event that brought together locals, expats, and new friends for a day that truly felt like home.

Congratulations to the passionate team at SA Love for pulling off a memorable and meaningful gathering — with a special word of thanks to organisers Odette Fouché and Wanda Voight, whose dedication and love for the community made the day a beautiful success.

Set in the serene surroundings of Lake Ridge Park, with its wide open fields, shaded picnic areas, and family-friendly amenities, the event was more than just a picnic — it was a celebration of culture, connection, and shared roots.

From the moment the first meat hit the grill, courtesy of Yummy Products, a wave of nostalgia swept over the park. The scent of sizzling meat and spices transported attendees straight back to their childhoods in South Africa — a reminder of what unites this global family.

The day was filled with laughter, spontaneous conversations, and joyful reunions.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of sponsors who brought a true taste of South Africa to Virginia:

  • Yummy Products – Serving up authentic biltong and braai magic that stole the show. Facebook
  • Hadeda Box – A heartfelt tribute to home and heritage, connecting people through curated boxes of South African nostalgia. Facebook
  • Kim’s Kitchen San Diego – Spicing up the day with delicious treats and true South African hospitality. Facebook
  • Estelle Lombard Havenga – A familiar face in the community and strong supporter of South African culture abroad.
  • Dutchy’s Gourmet Sausages – Crafting gourmet flavours that were a hit at the braai. Facebook
  • Koesister Company – Adding that perfect sweet finish with koesisters that melted in your mouth. Facebook
  • Nova Home Lovers – Helping South Africans find their dream homes in the US with heart and expertise. Website
  • Sonia T Castillo-Smith – HSBC Premier – Guiding the community through international wealth and banking solutions. Website

This picnic was more than just a day in the park — it was a testament to the power of shared identity and the joy of community. Here’s to many more gatherings that bring us together, wherever we may be in the world.

Dankie, SA Love — you brought the heart of Mzansi to the US, one braai fire at a time.
