Sun shines on South African Kuier

It was a jolly occasion when Friends of South Africa (FoSA) in Nashville held their annual Spring bring-and-braai at the end of March. Grant and Maresa Hensley’s home, with a typical Tennessee barn, and bright blue skies offered a perfect setting for a typical South African kuier.

Guests came from all over middle-Tennessee, and it was a thrill to welcome Roan Ash and his wife Zonika, to the party. Roan is still based in George, South Africa, but signed a record deal with Warner Music in Nashville. A team of reporters from USA Today also joined in on the fun and an article on the tradition of grilling meat on a fire, whether a typical BBQ from the American South or the traditional SA braai, will be published in the June 5th edition.

Fires were lit around noon, and people kept showing up until late afternoon. Traditional sides dishes and desserts ranging from pap, sous, bunny chows, and potjiekos to koeksisters, peppermint crisp pie and milktart were served. A lamb vendor, Scissortail Farms, brought fresh pasture-raised lamb to sample and buy. Gershon McGregor sold biltong, boerewors and droëwors.
